Line management: Project Manager and Country Representative.
Duty Station: Kirigiti, Kiambu County, Kenya. Field missions in other counties are foreseen depending on project needs.
BACKGROUND The CENTRE FOR ITALIAN LAYPERSONS FOR THE MISSIONS (Ce.L.I.M.) is a Non-governmental Organization founded in 1954, headquartered in Italy and recognized by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and the European Union. Our mission is to work for the sustainable development of communities by promoting ownership and self-determination through fixed-term socio-economic development actions. In three words, IMPACT TO CHANGE. CELIM implements international development cooperation projects in Africa, in the Balkans and in the Middle East, through the commitment of professional experts and volunteers along with the collaboration with local authorities and local partners. In Kenya, Ce.L.I.M.’s primary focus is on promoting sustainable agricultural practices, environmental protection, climate change mitigation and adaptation, food security, and the development of agri-food value chains.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project aims to strengthen the sustainability, inclusiveness, and value addition of the coffee value chain in Kenya. It works with smallholder farmers and cooperatives to improve agricultural practices, enhance traceability and digitalization, and promote value addition of coffee products. The project also supports youth engagement, environmental conservation, and the economic empowerment of vulnerable groups within coffee-growing communities.
Donor:Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) Start-End:January 2023- July 2026, with possibility of extension. Location: Kiambu and Embu County, Kenya.
JOB PROFILE Within the project’s value addition and local coffee consumption component, the Marketing Project Officer will support targeted coffee cooperatives in developing and refining business plans and commercial strategies aimed at enhancing their market presence, financial sustainability and competitiveness within the local coffee market while fostering commercial initiatives. The position requires a strong field presence, coordination and implementation of project activities in collaboration with other staff and project partners.
The selected candidate will contribute to building ownership and long-term sustainability within the local coffee value chain, while assisting the Project Coordinator in the overall implementation and follow-up of project activities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES • Support and guide coffee cooperatives in developing a business-oriented mindset and supporting practical market engagement opportunities. • Refine business plans and commercial strategies aimed at enhancing their market presence, financial sustainability and competitiveness within the local coffee market in collaboration with the project business development consultants. • Using a market analysis approach, proactively identify opportunities and facilitate commercial relationships between coffee cooperatives and local coffee retail businesses but also final customers through strategic and creative marketing tools. • Assist the Project Manager in the coordination and supervise the day-to-day implementation of field activities carried out by project staff and implementing partners, ensuring consistency, quality and timely delivery. • Conduct regular field monitoring visits to coffee cooperatives and retail businesses to assess progress, identify operational challenges and propose corrective actions to ensure achievement of project results. • Report writing and close collaboration with the M&E Officer. • Participate to stakeholder and project meetings, fostering new and innovative partnerships.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS • This position is open to Kenyan nationals only. • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Community Development, Agricultural Sciences or a related field. • Minimum of 3–4 years of relevant professional experience, preferably within projects focusing on business development, agricultural value chains, rural development or youth employability. • Prior knowledge or direct experience in the coffee value chain will be considered a strong asset. • Proven experience in field activity implementation and supervision of field teams. • Strong relationship management and coordination skills, with the capacity to build and maintain effective working relationships with public institutions, local authorities, businesses and strategic partners. • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with business environments, engaging constructively with cooperative leadership, business owners and county government representatives. • A marketing and business-oriented mindset, with experience or demonstrated interest in product promotion, market development or value addition will be considered a strong asset. • Excellent command of spoken and written English and Kiswahili. • Experience working with international NGOs and donor-funded projects is desirable.
